Significant New Alternatives Program: A Closer Look at the SNAP Program
Among other things, the SNAP program was designed to identify and evaluate substitutes in end-uses that have historically used ozone-depleting substances (ODS), as well as look at the overall risk to human health and the environment of both existing and new substitutes.
To arrive at determinations on the acceptability of substitutes, the EPA performs a cross-media analysis of risks from the use of various substitutes in different industrial and consumer uses that have historically used ODS. The EPA reviews the following characteristics when evaluating proposed substitutes:
Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)
Global Warming Potential (GWP)
Toxicity and Flammability
Occupational and Consumer Health/Safety
Local Air Quality and Ecosystem Effects
Under the SNAP program, Ecomate® has been classified as an acceptable alternative to a wide range of environmentally damaging blowing agents since 2003.
